Time Warner launching WiMAX as Road Runner Mobile on Dec. 1
Time Warner Cable will begin reselling Clearwire’s mobile WiMAX service in three cities in North Carolina beginning Dec. 1. The cities, which were previously announced, are Charlotte, Greensboro and Raleigh. The company also plans to launch the service in Dallas this year and in Hawaii in early 2010. The service, called Road Runner Mobile, will start at $39.95 per month for customers who already have at least one of the MSO’s other services. Prices for different bundles will range up to $79.95 per month. The plans break down into three categories:
$39.95 for “light” users, which caps data usage on the mobile WiMAX network at 2 GB per month. This price applies to customers who use at least one other Time Warner service.
$49.95 per month for unlimited mobile WiMAX for customers who also use either Time Warner’s Road Runner Standard or Turbo cable modem offerings; this plan also could offer further discounts.
$79.95 per month for unlimited 4G and 3G service (via Sprint Nextel) for customers who also use either Time Warner’s Road Runner Standard or Turbo cable modem offerings. There could be further discounts if customers sign up for other Time Warner services.
Time Warner has not specifically announced new devices related to the launches, but a Time Warner spokesman told FierceWireless in September that the company will sell a Road Runner Mobile-branded laptop card. The new market launches will make Time Warner the third company to resell Clearwire’s service as an MVNO. Clearwire investors Sprint and Comcast already resell mobile WiMAX under their own branded services.
