Google officially confirmed a prototype “mobile lab” smartphone
Google has officially confirmed the existence of a prototype “mobile lab” smartphone that combines “innovative” hardware with Android-based software. In the post, Mario Queiroz, a Google vice president of product management, said the company had developed a “mobile lab” device that “combines innovative hardware from a partner with software that runs on Android.” Google’s plans to offer its own ‘Google phone’ to compete directly with Apple, Motorola, and RIM’s Blackberry. The new offering, built by HTC, was made available to Google employees on Friday. The device will utilize Google’s Android operating system that was first introduced on Motorola’s Droid smartphone. “It won’t be sold by any one carrier, but instead will be an unlocked GSM phone. In the US, that means T-Mobile and possibly AT&T, whose exclusivity deal with the iPhone is about to run out. It will be running Android 2.1.” Michael Arrington of TechCrunch stated. He continued that the phone will be sold unlocked, it’ll run Android 2.1 and it’ll look like HTC Passion or HTC HD2. Expect to find a Snapdragon CPU on it, a high res OLED touchscreen and two microphones, one used to eliminate background noise.
