Motorola is predicted to fall to fifth place in the global ranking for mobile phone sales according to sources in the Taiwan handset industry. The sources told the DigiTimes publication that the latest estimates predict that Motorola will ship only 22-23 million units in the second quarter, as compared to 28.1 million and 24 million units projected for LG and Sony Ericsson, respectively.

The decline in Q2 shipments is not expected to knock Motorola out of the 4th position for the first half of the year though as it ships some 50 million handsets, ahead of Sony Ericsson’s recently revised 46 million.

According to recent figures from Strategy Analytics, global mobile handset shipments grew a healthy 14 percent year-over-year, to reach 282 million units in Q1 2008. Motorola, Sony Ericsson and Apple all lost marketshare. Motorola shipped 27.4 million handsets in Q1 of this year, compared to 115.5 million for Nokia, 46.3 million for Samsung and 24.4 million for LG.
