Orascom Telecom are apparently sizing up new investments in Asia and Africa. Apparently the largest mobile phone operator in the Middle East and North Africa has organized a new unit called the Telecel Globe to evaluate investment opportunities in the region. According to Naguib Sawiris, Orascom’s Chairman and CEO, Telecel Globe will function as a separate unit, with the mother company only supporting “its procurement power and commercial know how.” The problem with Africa lies in taxation and regulatory burdens, and he called on African governments to take initiatives to “maximize the positive impact of this investment.” Orascom Telecom has 74 million customers spread over the six countries of its operations - Algeria, Bangladesh, Egypt, Pakistan, Tunisia and Zimbabwe.
