U.S. Cellular was expanding its coverage into southern Maine, including into some of the state's most rural areas.
U.S. Cellular has been an important partner in my Connect ME initiative...advancements this company has made in wireless communication over the years have been important to Maine. Just as valuable is U.S. Cellular's commitment to bringing wireless service to our rural communities through the Universal Service Fund, which has benefited the health, public safety, and economic development of more than 25 rural Maine communities in the past two years alone.
The federal Universal Service Fund has also been working hard to get cellular service into areas with little or no coverage.
"This move is going to help a lot of Maine residents," said Bangor, Maine resident Neil Jameson. "I actually think a lot of people are going to switch over because other coverage now is pretty weak. All I can go is applaud the state for making such a move to help its people. This is going to help a lot of rural Maine residents and businesses throughout the state, whether its more rural or urban areas."
Governor Baldacci has been working hard and closely with Maine's state Congress to protect the Universal Service Fund and to ensure Maine would benefit from the federal program. U.S. Cellular is one of two cell phone carriers that use the Universal Service Fund program to expand its service into the state of Maine.
In fact, U.S. Cellular has been providing small parts of Maine with cell phone service since 1988. The service company made technology upgrades back in 2003, and then next year in 2004, U.S. Cellular launched cell phone service in Portland, Maine.
Governor Baldacci said in conclusion said, "U.S. Cellular has proven to be a valued corporate citizen in Maine and we applaud their commitment to the people of Maine
