OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Sprint Nextel Corp. said Wednesday it will add 150 positions to its Oklahoma City call center in an attempt to boost the wireless provider's lagging customer service reputation.
Sprint, based in Reston, Va., with operational headquarters in Overland Park, Kan., said it will add the new positions to the 700-employee call center by the end of the year and is hosting a series of job fairs to find applicants.
The company has struggled with technical and strategic problems since it purchased Nextel Communications Inc. in 2005, falling far behind rivals AT&T Inc. and Verizon Wireless in attracting and retaining subscribers.
Sprint was roundly criticized this summer when it said it was canceling the contracts of about around 1,000 customers that the company said had made an unreasonable number of calls to customer service. Some of those customers were later reinstated.
