Using NON carrier provided phone for new service

Another day and another scenario that i did come across at work.

Situation:
Dad came to the store with his little sport. Son already had a LG KG320 phone as a gift from TigerDirect.com. Nice phone by the way. And now dad wants his to have a plan with att/cingular. Dad was also asking about the insurance. So, time to maximize.

Solution:
First , i had to explain to dad that he cant get insurance on a non carrier phone. he got it from TigerDirect.com. Now its time for the back up plan. After explaining the following he decided to go with Sony Ericsson W810 (AT&T) for $1 with a $99 cash back to him.

Why did Dad decided to do that :
-Its also a cool phone, son likes it.
-His sons LG KG320 is almost has all the features as LG KG320, so if it breaks he is not downgrading his phone.
-He is making almost $100 that he can keep as a reserve just in case his son decided to go with something else. In that case Dad himself can use that phone.
